GROVE PLAYERS ENJOYS A PIZZA HOLIDAY PARTY
On December 4, 2008, Grove Players invited their
membership and friends and family to join in on a
little holiday gathering at Home Run Inn. We had a
great turnout and the weather even cooperated.
Mariellen Basalone and Susan Langenfeld co-chaired the
event with Mariellen at the helm during the evening.
After some appetizers, a very short but interesting
meeting was held. Upon adjournment, pizza was served
and the games began.
Did you ever try to name as many Christmas songs as
you could in a short amount of time? Jan Lown had 20
something and a couple others were close, all winning
various prizes. Later, we each had names put on our
backs - by asking others questions, we had to guess
who we were. We had the Little Drummer Boy, Angel and
many other holiday characters. Boy, the prizes were
nice - Danna won one really nice holiday village
church.
The evening ended with lots of holiday well wishes.
Hope your season was great.
LAMB-BUDACH AWARDS
Grove Players has been giving awards to deserving high
school students for many years now, in memory of
Carter Lamb and Chuck Budach who gave so much of
themselves to the rich history of Grove Players, both
on stage and behind the scenes. A student from
Downers Grove South and one of Downers Grove North
high schools are recognized.
DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH
This year's award was given to Kyle Akerman.
Recognizing Kyle was not difficult; he has
contributed to the theatre program all four years
both on stage and on tech. He's had leading roles
in "You Can't Take It With You", "The Good Doctor",
a Christmas Carol" and "One Upon a Mattress". Kyle
was special effects assistant for "Beauty and the
Beast" and has student directed, coordinated and
wrote for several freshmand and main stage plays.
Congratulations to Kyle for outstanding
contributions to his school's drama activities.
DOWNERS GROVE NORTH
The Lamb-Budach Award winner from Downers Grove
North High School was
Allen Kallas. Allen has been involved in theatre
since grade 6, when
he had a lead in "Pollyanna." At Herrick Middle
School and DGN, he was
involved in every play, both on stage and backstage.
He is knowledgeable of every crew position and is
especially skilled
with props. Allen sings as well as acts and is a
voice student of
Jann Mochel. At DGN, he participated in state-wide
theatre fests, was
a member of the school's Thespian Society, and was
selected in his
senior year to be one of the directors of the
studio, one-act plays.
Allen will begin his advanced theatre studies at
College of Du Page.
GROVE PLAYERS MEMBER AWARDS
Three Grove Players awards were announced at the June
membership
meeting and bestowed at the annual
banquet:
Novice of the Year:
Susan O’Bryrne. Susan acted in NUNSENSE,
HOW THE
OTHER HALF LOVES, and was the props chair for
OVER
THE TAVERN.
(You might have been lucky enough to
see Susan’s beautiful portrayal
of Laurey in
Theatre on the Hill’s recent production of
OKLAHOMA!)
HAM of the Year: Elaine
Albright.
Elaine was the AD/SM for NUNSENSE, as
well as chairing costumes and working on props and
set dressing. She served on the Hospitality Crew
for HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES
and was Hospitality
Chair for
OVER THE TAVERN. Elaine also
co-chaired the end of year banquet.

Player of the Year: Michael Pemberton.
Michael was thrilled to receive
a really big part in HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES. He
also helped the board with numerous financial
questions, worked Box Office, helped build and
strike, and was in charge of painting the OVER THE
TAVERN set. We are trying not to be selfish when
it comes to Mike, so we hope he is able to sell
his house and move away from us. (Yeah, right!)
