Character Descriptions

Ages given are character ages.

Maude Larrabee:  She has been a reigning beauty all of her life, with a smile that is a devastatingly effective mingling of laughter and rue.  She has a bearing and walk that make her seem taller than she is.  She speaks with a wide-eyed candor and directness that makes every remark of hers important beyond its meaning and every new experience of hers new—by definition—under the sun.  Age 58.

Julia Ward McKinlock:  She is intelligent, good-humored and has a great awareness of others.  She is the editor of a magazine, and, at the moment, recovering from minor surgery.  She and Maude have been friends since they were eighteen.  Age 58.

Linus Larrabee, Jr.:  He possesses an attractive sense of calm, quiet and reserve.  He always seems to be holding himself in, checking his laughter and relishing it alone. He is aware of his power and capabilities; it would take a great deal to shake him. He is easy in his movements.  Late 30s.

Linus Larrabee:  A man of considerable presence and charm.  Since he lost interest in most features of his life many years ago, he is inclined to vagueness about occurrences in the present that do not directly concern him, and has become increasingly taciturn, being given to abrupt silences that he shatters abruptly.  He carries himself well.  He is essentially a courtly and a gracious man. Late 60s.

David Larrabee:  David is like Linus in many ways, but “lighter,” overall.  He lacks the power, resolution and confidence of his brother.  He has the easy good humor that marks Linus, and the same way of moving easily, with sure control.  Mid-to late 20s.

Gretchen Larrabee:  David’s ex-wife.  She is strikingly, carefully, immaculately beautiful, with the calm air and hard sheen of a fashion drawing.  She is well-bred, she is knowing, she is tough.  Mid-to late 20s.

Sabrina Fairchild:  She is appealing and bright with animation and reflects the inner glow of a girl in love, for Sabrina Fairchild has fallen in love with the world and is carrying on a passionate affair with it.  She has returned from living in Paris for five years, and still bears traces of a shyness ingrained from childhood.  Mid-to late 20s.

Tom Fairchild:  Sabrina’s father and chauffeur to the Larrabees.  He has been their chauffeur, for over thirty years.  His deceased wife, and Sabrina’s mother, was the cook for the Larrabees.  Age 55.

Margaret:  The head of the household servants.  She has been with the Larrabees for a long time.  She has kept Sabrina up-to-date with the happenings in the Larrabee household.

Paul D’Argenson:  He has a moustache and wears glasses.  He is an affable and good-natured man.  He wears a permanent smile and his eyes are alive and perceptive.  With his affability, he has authority.  His accent has an overlay of Oxonian English.

A Young Woman:  Late teens.  Elegantly dressed.  (This actress will also deliver the Prologue that opens the show.)

A Young Man:  Late teens.  In formal attire.

Another Young Woman:  Late teens, and, also, elegantly dressed.  (This actress will also deliver the Prologue that opens the show.)

Another Young Man:  Late teens, and, also, in formal attire.
